Projects
These projects help Tibetans in Nepal and Sichuan to enhance their lives in various ways.
The Dolpo Hostel
Boudhanath, Kathmandu
This hostel was founded for students from the Dolpo region of Nepal so they can continue their studies throughout the year. The villages are so remote that they are cut off by snow for five months over winter when there is no schooling. Teachers trek over high mountain passes (4,500m+) to the region for the summer months but come down at the beginning of November.
The students are Nepalese by nationality but ethnically Tibetan. Their villages are some of the last remaining bastions of pure Tibetan ethnic culture and lifestyle remaining relatively untouched by Chinese, Nepalese or other outside influences in the world.
The hostel relies on donations to keep going. ... read more about this project
Greenhouse Project - Kham (Sichuan Province)
The Vajra Institute for Sustainable Training Assistance (VISTA) has received funding for the first of 9 greenhouses to be established in Sershul (N.W. Sichuan) close to Ju Mohor Monastery in Junyong village. This is part of an ongoing iniatiative in sustainable enterprises to support Tibetans in the area, particularly those that have been re-housed by the PCR authorities.
Adult Literacy Program - Volunteer Services Nepal
Volunteer Services Nepal is an NGO that works with Nepalese and Tibetans in and around Kathmandu. One of their projects is an adult literacy program teaching English to Tibetans close to Bhoudanath. They are always short of English teachers as most volunteers prefer to work with children in the orphanages. Some longer term volunteers (6 months+) are desperately required to provide continunity for the students. Does this interest you? You don't have to be an expert, just have a good command of spoken English.
